Chronic Pain Management Program

America is in pain. Current data indicates 100 million people in the United States suffer from some form of chronic pain. Despite interventions such as surgery, opioid medication, and injections, this number continues to rise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report more than 400,000 opioid associated deaths since 1999. As a result, the necessity for safe and therapeutic alternatives to address chronic pain has become of prime importance.

Cooperman Barnabas Therapeutic Pain Specialists

At Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Rehabilitation at The Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, our physical therapists are certified Therapeutic Pain Specialists. They are equipped with an advanced level of understanding of chronic pain and research-based interventions, they are able to assist patients with maximizing their function, managing their perception of pain, and preventing the need for invasive interventions.

Most individuals who suffer from chronic pain are under the misconception that their pain means that they must completely cease their function. Our physical therapists’ backgrounds in therapeutic neuroscience education allows them to help patients understand that pain does not mean daily functions should cease, but they may need to be modified.

Additionally, by using interventions like pacing and graded exposure, our physical therapists help patients manage their pain; allowing them to optimally perform their daily functions. With these combined techniques, patients are able to manage their own pain to reduce their perception of pain and optimize their function so that invasive procedures are not necessary to treat their pain.

Therapeutic Pain Specialist (TPS) Certification

The Therapeutic Pain Specialist (TPS) Certification, offered through the International Spine and Pain Institute (ISPI) in collaboration with the Evidence in Motion, is designed to instruct clinicians on the relevant research on pain science as well as evidence-guided interventions to effectively treat individuals who struggle with chronic pain. The program provides extensive information regarding the physiology of pain and the biopsychosocial factors associated with it. Clinicians are able to deepen their knowledge of evidence based interventions and their efficacy in treating chronic pain. Overall the certification ensures that the clinician possesses advanced clinical competence to evaluate and treat chronic pain.
