Bryce Survives a Near Fatal Hit and Run with Life a Long Brain Injury

Bryce smiling November 25, 2011 is a day Bryce and his family will never forget. On this tragic day, Bryce was struck by a speeding motorist that drove on the wrong side of the street while swerving around a vehicle that had stopped at a crosswalk in order to allow pedestrians, including Bryce, to cross the street. Bryce was struck and pulled under the SUV. He dragged for 60 feet, crushing his skull and limbs.

Bryce spent one week in a coma and suffered multiple skull fractures and a traumatic brain injury which caused seizures, bleeding and swelling of his brain, as well as severe damage to his neck and spine. He underwent several blood and platelet transfusions and multiple brain surgeries.

After spending 2 weeks in the hospital, Bryce was sent to Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside to spend time at the outpatient brain injury program after having spent time with the hospital as an outpatient before the accident for treatment related to his Pervasive Developmental Disorder- Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). Doctors gave Bryce an MRI upon his arrival at the hospital and found Chiari Malformation which is a condition where the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination and muscle movement, starts to enter the location normally occupied by the spinal chord. Knowing this allowed doctors and therapists to better understand Bryce’s condition, and better prepare to prescribe the proper treatments that would lead to a fast recovery.

Kristal Lint-Weekes, Bryce’s mother, credits Children’s Specialized Hospital for Bryce’s speedy recovery. “He was very comfortable returning to Children’s Specialized Hospital because the staff has always been so warm and welcoming. Bryce in the hospital Bryce still comes to the outpatient cognitive rehabilitation center at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside a few times per week to undergo treatment. His recovery is going so well and at such an exceptional rate that it is almost impossible for anybody to notice any physical or mental damages upon meeting Bryce. According to Bryce’s mother, “He brightens every life and touches every heart that he comes across. Bryce is my super hero!”
