Dr. Cangemi Takes on New Role as Infant Toddler Specialist at Children’s Specialized Hospital

August 02, 2017

Children’s Specialized Hospital is announcing the addition of Carla Cangemi, MD., Director of Infant Toddler Program, to the inpatient medical staff at PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital.  The infant toddler team specializes in the rehabilitation care and medical management of infants facing special health challenges such as chronic respiratory failure, congenital heart diseases, complications due to premature birth, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and more.

“We are very excited to have such a compassionate and exceptional physician oversee our infant toddler team here at Children’s Specialized Hospital,” said Dr. Colin O’Reilly, Section Chief of Inpatient Services, Children’s Specialized Hospital.  “Dr. Cangemi brings extensive knowledge and experience in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care and will be able to further develop our programs to ultimately ensure the patients we serve can reach their full potential.”

Dr. Cangemi is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both General Pediatrics as well as in the subspecialty of Pediatric Critical Care, a field which requires an additional three year fellowship.  This subspecialty fellowship is unique and only completed by approximately one hundred medical professionals per year in the United States. There are even fewer clinicians who achieve board certification in this field. Children’s Specialized Hospital is now home to two specialists with this certification.

The Infant Toddler Program at Children’s Specialized Hospital provides intensive and comprehensive rehabilitation services for infants and young children with complex medical needs. The program treats children who require all levels of pediatric care, including those who are medically fragile and technology dependent. Supported with 24-hour comprehensive medical and nursing care, a team of specialists continuously create a nurturing and calming setting that orients infants and toddlers to their sensory adaption and integration within their environment.

Prior to this role, Dr. Cangemi held the position of Pediatric Clinical Lead at Children’s Specialized Hospital’s Special Needs Primary Care in Mountainside, NJ. She completed her residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York and her fellowship at UMDNJ at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Dr. Cangemi will see patients at the PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital inpatient location in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  For more information about our services or to schedule an appointment, please visit our website, www.childrens-specialized.org or call 1-888-CHILDRENS.
