Free Workshop Series for Parents and Caregivers of Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder

September 30, 2016

Children’s Specialized Hospital will host five Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) workshops for parents and caregivers at several locations across New Jersey in the fall of 2016. The free day long program will consist of presentations from various professionals in healthcare and allow for a dialogue and interaction from the group as a way for community members to find support and guidance.

Free workshops will be held from 9 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. at the following Children’s Specialized Hospital locations:

  • October 7: Egg Harbor Township - 6106 Black Horse Pike, Egg Harbor Township, NJ
  • October 14: Mountainside - 150 New Providence Rd., Mountainside, NJ
  • October 28: Hamilton - 3575 Quakerbridge Rd. Hamilton, NJ
  • November 4: SPANISH SESSION Mountainside – 150 New Providence Road, Mountainside, NJ
    • Live video broadcast to Toms River (94 Stevens Road) and Hamilton (3575 Quakerbridge Rd.) locations.

*The November 4 workshop will be hosted in Spanish at the Children’s Specialized Hospital Mountainside, NJ location but will feature a live video broadcast to the Toms River and Hamilton locations.

The ASD workshops begin with a “What is Autism Spectrum Disorder” presentation. The next five presentations vary based on the location and agenda but typically include a behavioral analyst, developmental pediatrician, psychologist, occupational therapist, and a speech therapist. To conclude the event, there is a parent’s panel that consists of two to four parents whose child was recently diagnosed with ASD who initiate a discussion based on his or her personal experience and reaction to their child’s diagnoses. A few of the many topics discussed include improving communication, handling behavior, social concerns, sensory and  sleep issues, medication, feeding concerns, and community support.

“Our first session of workshops that we held in the spring were a huge success. We were lucky to have a principal from a local school present and it was incredible because she was able to hear from parents and really get a better sense of their perspective so that she can learn how to support them in her leadership role in the school system,” said Sandra Johnson a social worker in the Autism Program at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Fanwood, NJ.

This is a unique opportunity for parents to speak with professionals in the health care industry and answer questions without feeling as if it is an evaluation. ASD workshops are a judgment free zone where all attendees are encouraged to network and gain support from others in the community and learn from others experiences.

“The biggest reward is giving these families access to friends and practitioners in a relaxed setting so that they do not feel alone and can receive concrete and structured information,” said Johnson.

This event is open to the public and attendees do not need to be Children’s Specialized Hospital patients or employees. Clinicians, school officials, professionals in the field, parents, and caregivers are encouraged to attend. Due to the style and content covered in these workshops, children are not permitted and babysitting services will not be provided.
