Center for Discovery, Innovation and Development Internship

The Center for Discovery, Innovation and Development (CDID) mentors and train interns who are interested in contributing to positive disruptive changes for individuals with special needs. Interns will gain valuable skills and have the opportunity to make contributions that directly impact the lives of children with special needs and their families.

CDID is currently seeking interns who are interested in contributing to our work related to social impact and community investment initiatives, particularly with research and collecting metrics for new and existing programs. Key projects around social determinants of health include but are not limited to food insecurity, behavioral health and workforce readiness programs for children/adolescents with special needs.

Eligibility for this position includes:

  • An interest in enhancing the lives of individuals with special needs (individuals with special needs are encouraged to apply!)
  • Must be a motivated self-starter with the ability to maintain a positive attitude and professional relationship with others
  • Ability to multi-task, pick up new skills quickly and receive direction from multiple individuals
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • This position is currently remote with the potential for some occasional travel to our Millburn, NJ office or other local sites.
  • This position is eligible for either a paid stipend or school credits.

Childhood Injury Prevention Internship

Childhood Injury Prevention Interns will work with the coordinators of Union County Safe Kids Coalition, sponsored by Children’s Specialized Hospital. Interns will learn about safety in the home, in and around cars, and at play. Interns will complete a special project in a safety area covered by Safe Kids Worldwide, and support safety initiatives and community events.

Eligibility for this position includes:

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program studying public health, nursing, or a related program
  • Availability for a minimum of 30 hours of internship time during a semester
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office Suite
  • This position is based out of the Mountainside location
  • Afternoon and evening hours are preferred, and availability to attend at least 1 community event on a weekend or evening

Child Life Internship and Practicum Opportunities

Child Life Internships follow the modules, guidelines, and assessment recommended by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP). A child life internship experience is exclusively offered at the New Brunswick campus for 15 consecutive weeks for a total of 600 hours. The internships are offered in the spring and fall (subject to staff availability). Click here for current child life internship opportunities and application materials.

Psychology Externship

The Mountainside CSH psychology department offers an externship for advanced doctoral students in psychology. The program holds two externship positions. Students are required to work 16 hours spread over two days. Individual and group supervision in the form of case conference presentations, seminars and department meetings are included in the minimum time requirement. Each student will be assigned a primary supervisor who they will meet with at least once per week for one hour. Students will participate in individual, group and family therapy during their tenure. Students will conduct diagnostic assessments for their patients. Students also have the opportunity to observe and conduct psychological testing, Autism evaluations, and feeding team evaluations. Students will have opportunities to “co-treat” patients and their families as the need arises.

Applications should be made in January, and decisions are completed by March for an externship starting in September. The externship follows the NY/NJ consortium guidelines for interviewing and extending offers to applicants. Recreational Therapy Practicums and Internships:

Recreational therapy practicum experiences are available in our Community Recreation Program primarily in our Mountainside location. If accepted, students are expected to complete their practicum over the course of a minimum 7 week period. Opportunities to complete hours over shorter time frame are offered at our summer camps. In order to apply for a recreational therapy internship, the student must have a degree pertaining to Therapeutic Recreation/Recreation Therapy as defined by the current NCTRC standards. Completion of a minimum of 90 credit hours toward degree attainment. Completion of all required coursework other than the internship requirement, as defined by the current NCTRC standards. Recreational therapy internships allow students the opportunity to intern at one of our three locations which include New Brunswick, Mountainside and Toms River.
