Martial Arts

Children’s Specialized Hospital’s Recreational Therapy Department offers a martial arts program for children with disabilities between the ages 5-13 years. The classes provide instruction on basic martial arts techniques and listening skills. Coordination of movement, balance, body awareness, strength, and thought are also incorporated. This program provides children with an opportunity for positive peer interactions and promotes a sense of independence, confidence, and belonging. Registration opens November 10th at 9:00am.

Description of classes:

Children are placed in the most appropriate level to suit their needs and abilities. Please call us at (908) 301-5516 to help identify the best class placement for your child. Class placement is based on a child’s attention span and ability to follow directions in a group setting.

Dragon Warriors: A beginner martial arts program designed for

  • Children requiring physical support and/or individual attention to follow directions
  • Introducing basic concepts of martial arts
  • Coordinating basic movements
  • Social interaction

Skills will be addressed through modeling & practicing, and physical & social activities.

Tiger Warriors: Beginner martial arts program designed for

  • Children with an approximate attention span greater than 3-5 minutes
  • Children that follow 1-2 step directions independently or with minimal redirection
  • Learning martial arts concepts, movements, and language
  • Practicing coordination of movement
  • Building social skills

Skills will be addressed through martial arts drills, games, and social skill activities.

To register your child for the Winter 2015 Martial Arts Program please call our registration line at (908) 301-5516 no earlier than November 10th at 9:00am.

Registration is on a first come first serve basis. Please note that you are not guaranteed the day/time you request. We strive to respond in a timely manner and appreciate your patience during this time. Please refrain from calling multiple times as it will delay the process.

Please include the following information on the voice mail in this order:

  • Class desired (be specific with which class & time)
  • Child’s name, date of birth, and diagnosis
  • Parent/guardian’s name
