The following services are provided on an inpatient and outpatient basis:
Seating and Positioning
A functional position that enables a child or adolescent with a severe disability to interact independently with his or her environment is of fundamental importance. Our staff is adept at positioning children in a manner that maximizes their potential to function independently. This is achieved with a comprehensive range of equipment, some of which has been developed by Children's Specialized Hospital. In addition, "hands on" seating and positioning workshops are offered to professionals, parents, and caregivers.
Mobility and Environmental Access
Independent mobility is crucial to the development and well-being of children. Without it, they cannot access their environment or the people within it. This program provides independent mobility through a wide assortment of wheelchairs and other devices. Every effort is made to achieve mobility; this includes children who are dependent on ventilators and children at very young ages — ages at which children normally obtain mobility.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication
This program provides clients of all ages who cannot speak or write with a means of communication. The goal of the program is to provide a means of communication that is integrated with the client's daily routine allowing much greater participation in home, community, school, and working environments. State-of-the-art equipment is used to evaluate clients for the most appropriate communication system. Follow-up training and consultative services are available.
To facilitate functional use of communication devices, an intensive AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) therapy camp is offered. This one-week, overnight program takes place at a fully accessible camp location. Daily activities include therapy, recreation, nature programs, swimming, and evening activities. A parent or caregiver accompanies the child in the program to learn to operate the device and facilitate functional use at home.
