Children's Specialized Hospital Occupational Therapy
Hand and Upper Extremity Dysfunction
Hand and upper extremity therapy focuses on the acute needs of acquired deficits post surgery or trauma. Issues impacting the hands and arms affect a child's ability to play and develop into an independent adult. Specially trained occupational therapists have the ability to provide services for a number of upper extremity diagnoses including, but not limited to:

  • Fractures
  • Tendon repairs/transfers
  • Brachial plexus injuries
  • Neuropathies
  • Elbow, wrist, hand, digit sprains/strains
  • Shoulder concerns
  • Amputations
  • Crush injuries
  • Radial club hand
  • Congenital deformities (including syndactyly, camptodactyly, etc.)
  • Serial casting
  • Thermoplastic splints

Highly trained occupational therapists address concerns that affect the upper extremity via splinting, mobilizations, manual therapy programs, and play while working in conjunction with specialized surgeons and physicians for rehabilitation of the upper extremity post trauma and post surgery. Hand specialist services are available in Hamilton, Mountainside and Toms River.
