Developmental Screening
Developmental Screening
Screening for developmental delays and autism is available at Children’s Specialized Hospital. Children ages twelve to forty-eight months are screened by an Advanced Practice Nurse using standardized assessment measures.
It is important to observe a child’s early developmental milestones such as sitting, walking, language and behavior. Every child develops at his or her own pace, but sometimes certain areas of a child’s development are delayed.
It is important for parents of young children to understand some of the developmental milestones that are important to watch as your child is growing.
The M-CHAT™ is a parent completed questionnaire consisting of twenty-three items designed to screen for autism spectrum disorders in toddlers (i.e., over the age of twelve months, and ideally over the age of eighteen months and up to forty-eight months). A parent can complete the items independently. The M-CHAT™ does not allow a clinician to make a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder, but is a very useful clinical tool that has excellent sensitivity and specificity. Positive results suggest a high risk for an autism spectrum disorder, and may necessitate referral. The M-CHAT™ does not require clinician observation.
