Child Life Student Competencies
With gradual increase in responsibility, students will gain experience, knowledge, and competency in the following areas:

  • Assess patient needs
  • Identify appropriate interventions
  • Determine treatment objectives from assessment results
  • Document treatment goals in a therapy treatment report
  • Write discharge summaries reflecting progress made toward goals
  • Communicate patient needs/progress at interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Organize daily responsibilities and scheduling in a timely, efficient manner
  • Plan and implement Special Event and Community Integration trip
  • Present in-service to department staff.
  •  Develop and complete a child life related project to be determined by student and supervisor.
  • Develop and monitor personal (educational) goals and progress
  • Describe various conditions, treatment, prognosis and their functional consequences
  • Identify safety issues and precaution required for fire, infection control, etc.
  • Adhere to Departmental and Hospital policies and Procedures
  • Identify and practice confidentiality
  • Understand and participate in the concepts of interdisciplinary programming
  • Identify developmental processes in pediatrics
  • Identify medical terminology and diagnostic descriptions related to disabilities
  • Demonstrate professional conduct in the clinical setting
  • Identify how internship experience relates to CLC Position Statement
  • Understands Performance Improvement in the Recreational Therapy/Child Life Department


The student will be given the opportunity to implement his/her creativity to combine theory, knowledge and practical experience. The student will be assessed throughout the internship and will be given both a mid-term and final evaluation. In addition, the student will in turn be given the opportunity to evaluate the field experience at the conclusion of the internship.

Students will also be given the opportunity to achieve competency in all areas recommended by the Child Life Council for clinical experiences.
