Summit Area Public Foundation Awards $25,000 Grant to Children’s Specialized Hospital
Funding to Support Applied Behavior Analysis Program for Children with Autism
February 27, 2013 - Children's Specialized Hosptial

The Summit Area Public Foundation, a community foundation that fosters philanthropy in the Summit, NJ area by identifying local needs and offering donors flexible ways to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors, donated a $25,000 grant to Children’s Specialized Hospital’s Applied Behavior Analysis program at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Fanwood.

Children’s Specialized Hospital is New Jersey’s largest provider of autism services and is a leader in the field of early diagnosis and treatment for children with autism. Children’s Specialized Hospital created a new Applied Behavior Analysis program in 2012.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach to teaching people on the autism spectrum using positive reinforcement. The National Autism Standards Project and Autism New Jersey consider ABA one of the most effective treatments for toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children with autism spectrum and other developmental disabilities.

Jill Harris, Ph.D. director of program development and the ABA program for Children’s Specialized Hospital, is very appreciative of the support from the Summit Area Public Foundation.

“We are very thankful for the kind donation from the Summit Area Public Foundation. The grant will be used to create additional treatment space for kids receiving ABA services as well as purchase new equipment that will help them reach their treatment goals,” said Harris. “ABA services are vital for many kids with autism spectrum disorder as it helps build fundamental skills needed to reach the best functioning possible.”

Within the first year, the ABA program is projected to evaluate approximately 135 children between 1 and 8 years old, and thanks to the kind donation from The Summit Area Public Foundation, the Children’s Specialized Hospital in Fanwood will be able to grow and better serve the children and families of our community.
