Playball for Miracles Steps Up to the Plate to Make Miracles Happen
April 29, 2013 - Children's Specalized Hospital

The ninth Annual Playball for Miracles Charity Softball Tournament will be held on May 4 at Warinanco Park in Roselle, NJ. Playball for Miracles is an event that began as a one-day softball outing inspired by a special little boy.  It is now coming out swinging for its ninth year to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals local beneficiary, Children’s Specialized Hospital.

Playball for Miracles was created in 2005, when founder and chief coordinator Erin Kelly-McGuinness decided to raise funds for the organization after a family friend, Patrick Macnab, was diagnosed with a rare bleeding disorder.   Erin started the tournament to raise awareness for Patrick’s disease and all other illnesses inflicting children.

“Playball for Miracles has been making miracles happen for over 8 years,” said Kelly-McGuinness. “We are excited about our growth, especially the addition of more events such as our raffle and miracle nights. But the best part is watching Patrick grow up and come to understand that he is the reason why we have done this and how great an impact it has had. Patrick ‘thinks’ he is famous...and to us he is.”

Much like Patrick, the organization has grown before Kelly-McGuinness’s eyes. In 2005, six local adult, men’s softball teams gathered to play in the 1st softball tournament. In the years since, the tournament has more than doubled in size, and PBFM has added a Super Cash Raffle and Miracle Night to its yearly events. Over the course of eight years Playball for Miracles has raised $80,000 to support the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals beneficiary, Children's Specialized Hospital, with the help of generous sponsors, such as Elizabeth NJ Firemen’s Federal Credit Union, Wakefern and the American Softball Association.

Theannual tournament has become a day of family fun complete with a barbeque, raffles, the Ultimate Game Truck and a visit from Somerset Patriots mascot, Sparkee. Sparkee’s visit helps to remind spectators that Playball for Miracles will continue to raise money at Miracle Night on June 23rd at the TD Bank Ball Park when the Somerset Patriots take on the Long Island Ducks.
