Congressman Jon Runyan visits Children’s Specialized Hospital
Special Kids Receive Special Visitor
September 07, 2012 - Children's Specialized Hospital

Congressman Jon Runyan (R-NJ-03) met with patients, families and staff at Children’s Specialized Hospital at the outpatient and pediatric long term care center in Toms River. The Congressman delivered a donation of children’s books for patients to enjoy during their stay. The books have been donated through the Congress Surplus Books Program.
“Children’s Specialized is a great asset for the Toms River Community and I was honored to spend some time meeting with their staff and patients,” said Congressman Runyan. “The children all seemed to be having a great time while receiving their daily treatment and that is a testament to the ingenuity of the therapists, nurses, and all the staff. I was inspired by the children I met and I look forward to working with Children’s Specialized Hospital moving forward to ensure their success in our region.”

Junnie Sharkey, administrative director, Children’s Specialized Hospital Toms River, toured the Congressman and his staff through the physician’s service area and the outpatient therapy gym. Children’s Specialized provides outpatient therapy and physician services for children affected by brain injury, spinal cord injury, premature birth, autism, developmental delays, and life-changing illnesses.  Children’s Specialized is also the state’s largest provider of autism services.
Judy Potter, LNHA, RN, administrative director pediatric long term care, Children’s Specialized Hospital then toured the group through the hospital’s specialized pediatric long term care unit. The Congressman and his staff met and interacted with staff and several pediatric patients who live at the pediatric nursing home. These patients are too medically to live at home so they live at Children’s Specialized and receive specialized nursing care and participate in therapies daily.
“We were thrilled to offer Congressman Runyan the opportunity to tour our pediatric rehabilitation center, meet our patients and see first hand the services we provide to children with special needs,” said Warren E. Moore, FACHE, executive vice president and COO, Children’s Specialized Hospital. “The Congressman’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the children of southern New Jersey is evident and we are thankful for his continued support.”

Since being elected to Congress in 2010, Congressman Runyan has been a strong advocate for children with autism and individuals suffering from traumatic brain injuries. The Congressman chairs the Veterans Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, where he has advocated for more research on the effects and treatment of head injuries. He has also been very active with autism, helping to promote awareness of this neurodevelopment disorder. For his work, he was honored earlier this year by Autism Speaks.
