PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital Opens in New Brunswick

We did it - thanks to you!

In December, we proudly opened the doors to PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital, our brand-new 60-bed inpatient center in New Brunswick.

The five-story hospital treats children affected by traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and premature birth, as well as other life-changing illnesses and injuries. Designed with input from staff, physicians, nurses, and therapists, and families, the hospital is a vibrant, spacious, colorful space brimming with the hope of a healthier, fuller life for our patients.

More than 3,700 people made gifts to The Building Begins with Children, the Foundation's capital campaign to help fund the construction of the new hospital. Every donation was the largest each donor has ever made to Children's Specialized. The hospital is named for the state's largest utility, through a gift of $5 million from the PSEG Foundation. Ralph Izzo, President, Chairman, and CEO of PSEG, served as campaign chairman.

“Over the course of this project, we've been inspired by this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a new children's hospital,” said Alexander R. Giaquinto, Ph.D, chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees. “What a great reward to know that as the doors of the hospital open, we have exceeded our fundraising goal and truly delivered on our foundation's mission.”

The campaign's final phase included a challenge from the Kresge Foundation. The prestigious grant-maker would award an additional $1 million gift to the project - if we raised the final $4.9 million of our campaign goal by September 30, 2007.

“Our excellent rehabilitative care hasn't changed,” said Frank V. Castello, M.D., medical director for the hospital. “What's changed is the way we can provide it. More room, state-of-the-art equipment, and most of all, the ability to really include families in their child's care. It's all possible here.”

Castello also notes the importance of the location, adjacent to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Child Health Institute at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

“This is unprecedented in New Jersey,” he added, “a true pediatric healthcare campus, with acute care, rehabilitation, and research.”
