Brain Injury Program

About the Program

When a child suffers a brain injury, the path to recovery is often a challenging one. Young patients need a broad range of complex medical care and rehabilitation therapy to recover from their injuries. The Brain Injury Program, a center of excellence at Children’s Specialized Hospital, offers comprehensive care to meet the unique needs of children and teens with neurological disorders and acquired brain injuries.

Established in 1981, the Brain Injury Program is designed for infants to young adults up to age 21 at all levels of cognitive awareness. Providing innovative, expert and loving care, we help young patients continue to play, learn and grow while reclaiming their lives.

Our program aims for maximum rehabilitation with a special emphasis on meeting normal pediatric and developmental milestones. To help meet these goals, we offer both inpatient and outpatient services plus a long-term follow-up clinic. Our program offers a continuum of care for the entire recovery journey—from states of coma to a return to home, school and community life.

Patients and their families are an essential part of the rehabilitation team. We strongly encourage regular visits. We offer various services to educate families and help them cope with their children's injuries. These include the Umbrella Program, patient/family training and support groups. A representative from the Psychology Department reaches out to families when patients are admitted.
